Chapter Seven

“Don’t worry, you’ve arrived.”

Arrived where? It must be hell. There’s no way I’d ever make it to heaven.

His eyes opened, and he attempted to identify the female who’d spoken to him. It wasn’t Clemence.

It can’t have been her. She’s alive, and I’m dead. Besides, the girl spoke with an altogether different accent. Dutch? Maybe that’s because I died in Holland.

At first, he couldn’t see a thing, and he wiped a hand across his eyes. They were covered in mud and green slime.

Mud and green slime? How can that be, my body’s still trapped underwater in that damned tunnel?

His eyelids slid open, and he was staring at a girl of around eighteen to twenty-years-old. Her face was gaunt, and she had dark hair cut short and dark eyes. She wore men’s clothes, baggy pants, and a woolen coat fastened with a length of string. He stared past her at the flat, Dutch countryside, and it struck him like a thunderbolt. He wasn’t dead.

“How? How did I get out of there?”

“We were looking for survivors from the Arnhem attacks, and I chanced to look down into the sump at the end of the tunnel when I heard someone talking. I knew you were in trouble, so I called my friends, and we dived under the water and pulled you out. You were about ten feet from safety.”

“So… I’m alive.”

She smiled. “Yes, you’re alive.”

“Who’re you?”

“We’re the local Dutch Resistance group. They’ve called for us to get together to attempt to rescue a stranded aircraft about three miles from here. We’re assembling as many people as possible. They need us to lift the aircraft, and it’s very heavy.”

“It’s the aircraft I flew in on.”

Her eyes widened. “You did?” She nodded her understanding, “So you’re planning to leave the same way?”

“That’s the general idea.” He realized something was missing, “Say, did you happen to see my weapon? It’s an MP-40, a German machine pistol.”

One of our men recognized it. He said he’d used the same weapon he took from a dead German.”

“That’s the way I got mine.”

She nodded. “That’s what we thought. It’d been submerged in water, but he’s stripping it and drying it out.”

“I’m obliged.” He started to get his feet, wobbled, and almost fell. She grabbed one arm, and a man ran forward and gripped the other arm. They held him for a few moments until he felt better. He told them he was okay and began looking for the rope. When they gave him curious looks, he explained the reason why, and several seconds later came to his senses, “Uh, okay, forget that. There’s no way we could use that tunnel to escape from the pumping station.”

“I don’t understand,” the man said, speaking English with a strong Dutch accent, “Who needs to escape from the pumping station?”

“About thirty American troops and two civilians. The Germans have the place surrounded. They don’t have long before they attack, and they won’t stand a chance. All they need do is lob grenades down there or maybe poison gas.
